“This Might Get Weird Y’all” Gets Weird and So Much More

Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart, two-thirds of what’s been dubbed as “YouTube’s Holy Trinity” brought their live comedy show “This Might Get Weird Y’all” to Boston on March 15 at the Wilbur Theatre. This was the first of their shows to go by this name. Before, they have performed many times with Hannah Hart under the name #NoFilter.

The show had all you could expect and more from the funny ladies, known for their YouTube channels “It’sGrace” and “You Deserve A Drink.” It was filled with puns, crude jokes and more than a little alcohol, all of which their fans have come to expect from the two.

Because of the show’s close proximity to St. Patrick’s Day, the performance had a St. Patty’s Day theme.   At one point in the show, Grace read through a “touching” letter she supposedly received from her Irish Grandmother before she died. She then performed her family’s traditional St. Patrick’s day dance, which was less of a dance and more of Grace running around on stage smashing potatoes on the ground.

The show also had a St. Patrick’s Day themed drinking game where every time someone saw a leprechaun, they took a drink. It wasn’t until the end of the show that Grace and Mamrie finally found the leprechaun, though that didn’t stop them from drinking the whole time. The leprechaun turned out to be fellow YouTuber Lohanthony, who then quizzed Grace and Mamrie on current teen slang.

Lohanthony wasn’t the only special guest of the evening. YouTuber Flula Borg was the DJ for the evening. Michael Buckley from the channel “What the Buck” showed up to sing karaoke as “Mikey B,” a BU student the two girls met the night before at a karaoke bar. There was also an appearance by Grace’s younger brother Tim Helbig, who tried to help two audience members find love in a dating game.

Overall, the show had a very authentic YouTube vibe. It brought random and often ridiculous humor you find on the site to life. It was filled with a series of YouTube-esque bits which made it feel like you were watching the filming of one of Grace or Mamrie’s videos before all the edits. The show truly highlighted the personalities fans know and love from Grace and Mamrie’s channels.

The funniest part of the evening may have been when Mamrie apologized to all the parents in the audience for her many very crude jokes, promising them “your daughter watches Grace’s channel not mine.”

Grace and Mamrie hope to do more live comedy shows this year, with two #NoFilter shows currently planned for London and Dublin with the other third of their Holy Trinity, Hannah Hart.
