Unpopular Songs by Today’s Popular Artists

Late summer and early September is always a hot season for new music. This one has been particularly filled with some artists releasing music for the first time in years. But as some of today’s most well-known artists release some new material, it’s important to dive into some of their old material — perhaps some that might not be their #1 hits.
“Brown Eyes” by Lady GaGa

As the Mother Monster returns on the scene with the beautiful punch in the face that is “Perfect Illusion,” it only makes sense to dive back into some of her old hits from the early 2010s. One song from her first album, The Fame, was “Brown Eyes.” This song is a dirty, guitar-heavy soul tune written by GaGa herself about a lost brown-eyed lover. This song strikes anyone who wished they had more time and different circumstances for their love affairs. 
“Trees” by Twenty One Pilots
 

One of the best things to come out of the Suicide Squad film was the Twenty One Pilots hit “Heathens.” Any diehard fan of these guys loved this track, especially because it is a similar tone to another song on their first album, Vessels. The song is called “Trees,” and it’s a song that starts out as a quiet and sweet track about social anxiety that ends with complete and total head-banging.
“You Lied” by Green Day

Everyone who went through a punk phase loved Green Day. How could one not love Green Day? They are as part of teen angst as dying your hair and shopping at Hot Topic. There was then vast excitement upon their announcement of a new album and tour. Their new single,“Bang Bang,” is reminiscent of old-school punk Green Day of the 90s/early 2000s. If you enjoy this kind of Green Day, a comical punk tune on the 2002 album Shenanigans, called “You Lied” is something you should check out. Have you ever had someone lie to you right to your face, and it’s completely obvious that everything they’re saying isn’t true? This song is a direct attack on that person.
“Runaway” by Ed Sheeran

How many times can one really listen to “Thinking Out Loud?” It was cute when it played at the high school prom, but now hearing it on the radio is just exhausting. If you’re looking for a groovy track with both Ed Sheeran the melodist and Ed Sheeran the rapper, the song “Runaway” on the Multiply album is an autobiographical track discussing Ed leaving his home with an alcoholic father to live on his own.
“Drunk In The Woods” by Walk the Moon

Walk the Moon have gone from shy, indie boys to pop rock superstars in the past two years. They took the world by storm with their absurdly catchy song “Shut Up and Dance” and have recently released a single called “Back to U,” featuring Steve Aoki and Boehm. Back in 2013, however, they released a small EP called Tightrope, which featured some acoustic versions of their songs, a cover, as well as some new tunes. One of these tunes is called “Drunk in the Woods,” which is a powerhouse of an indie tune that includes some killer drum beats as well as some psycho synth. If you’re a fan of Walk the Moon’s sound, this is a hidden gem that deserves a lot more recognition than it has.
“My Style” by Black Eyed Peas feat. Justin Timberlake

Despite what many have thought about the Black Eyed Peas, they were actually really awesome back in the early 2000s, but did you know they did a song with Justin Timberlake? Timberlake is one of the biggest celebrities of this generation due to his superior triple threat status. He has acted in many films in the past several years, and, as we have all heard, has recently released a single for the movie Trolls called “Can’t Stop the Feeling” that had every mom in spin class feeling motivated and trendy. This song from the iconic album Monkey Business is a funky piece of 2000s hip-hop that would get anyone on their feet. Lord have mercy.
It’s important to recognize long-lasting talent in today’s music world. There are always going to be one-hit-wonders, but true artists only come around every so often. Some pop artists can’t always be defined by their most popular track. So, in this flourishing season for new music, don’t forget to look back. For every radio-hit a truly talented artist releases, there’s always a deeper track hidden on an album that could end up stealing your heart.
