‘2 Broke Girls’ Review/Recap: “And the God Mama Drama”

Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) step into their role of godmothers this week as they help Oleg and Sophie plan Barbara’s baptism. The added pressure comes when Oleg’s mother visits. Of course, since Oleg is the strangest character on the show, it can be expected that his mother is even worse.

Aside from the cliche of Sophie (Jennifer Coolidge) and Oleg’s mother fighting for Oleg’s (Jonathan Kite) attention, Max and Caroline get fired as godparents when they cannot prove that they are religious enough to help raise Barbara properly. They decide to hold a makeshift baptism in their dessert bar, since Earl (Garrett Morris) is a minister (emphasized with the best line of the episode: “I’m performing a conscious uncoupling at two.”) Oleg stands up to his mother on Sophie’s behalf, and everybody lives happily ever after.
The funniest part of the episode was when Max and Caroline sneak into the church to steal holy water. Max pretends to confess while Caroline scoops holy water into an empty milk carton. The episode was strange, as every episode of “2 Broke Girls” is. Yet, it was good because it had a storyline that fits into the context of the show, rather than filling up time. Last week’s episode, in which a group of underground female arm wrestlers took over the bar, was a waste of time.
Tonight’s episode reminded viewers of the relationship the main characters have with one another. Sophie and Oleg are outlandish and disgusting, but they love each other, spend all their time together, and have a strong commitment to their family. The baptism scene showed that no matter how many times everyone makes fun of each other, they will come together to make sure Barbara has a loving support system as she grows up.

While the episode was straightforward, it alluded to a few other plot points that may play out during the course of the season. When Caroline meets Oleg’s mother, she introduces herself saying a movie is being made about her. A chunk of episodes near the end of last season took Caroline and Max to Los Angeles to sign the movie deal. Perhaps the rest of the season will pursue the making of the film. Knowing Caroline’s luck, the film will not turn out the way Caroline hopes (a la Ted Mosby and “The Wedding Bride” in ‘How I Met Your Mother’?)
For the past few weeks, there has been an increase in jokes about Earl forgetting things and having medical troubles (this week Oleg claimed Earl is “the reason we know our defibrillator works.”) Are these all just an attempt to create more humor around Earl, the one character who has never been victim to comedic jabs? Or should the audience be worried about Earl?

We’ve seen Max and Caroline’s money counter go up at the end of each episode, usually by a couple hundred dollars. It would be nice to know how well the dessert bar is doing, and whether or not people are showing up.
Next week the show airs on Halloween night, so many tricks and treats are sure to hit the diner.
Episode Grade: B+
