'How to Get Away with Murder' Recap: "Is Someone Really Dead?"

Last week’s How to Get Away with Murder was the very definition of insanity. From surprising hookups to explosive information about “Who’s Under the Sheet?” How to Get Away with Murder brought its A-game. This week’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder continued the insanity trend as more storylines were explored and big twists kept on coming. Let’s recap the latest episode “Is Someone Really Dead?”
At this point on How to Get Away with Murder, everyone is having sex with eachother or they are threatening to kill someone. Pretty typical behavior from our cast of characters. With only two episodes left until the “Who’s Under the Sheet?” reveal the stakes are even higher. This episode picks up right where we left off last week, with Michaela in her apartment with her adoptive mother. She just answered Connor’s phone and is not trying to call Asher and find him. We find out that Asher (Matt McGorry) is safe in the flashforwards when Michaela (Aja Naomi King) desperately tries to find him.
In the flashbacks, Wes (Alfred Enoch), Laurel (Karla Souza), Annalise (Viola Davis) and Bonnie (Liza Weil) are dealing with the news that Frank (Charlie Weber) is right around the corner. Annalise feels betrayed when she learns that Bonnie kept this news from her. Bonnie tells them that she recorded Frank confessing to Wallace Mahoney’s murder. This isn’t that surprising because let’s be honest, we figured he did it.
Just as all of this information is being spilled, Wes and Laurel both get a call from Meggy (Corbin Reed). She’s panicking because the police are at Wes’ apartment. Laurel tells Meggy that Wes is at the library and she should leave. Meanwhile, Annalise tells Wes that he’s now under “Keating House Arrest” and can’t leave. To make this house arrest even better, she tells him that Bonnie will be stuck there with him. Perfect.
Annalise is back in the classroom this week and all feels right with the world. Although she has to agree to attend alcohol rehabilitation classes and is on very thin ice with the school board, but she’s still back and better than ever.
We’ve really missed the Keating Five meeting at Keating Associates and apparently they’ve missed it too. This week, Annalise gathers the gang to tell them about Mahoney and why the police are looking for Wes. Annalise is thoroughly convinced that the police are after Wes because Frank gave over his name. Laurel thinks otherwise and even calls Frank to assure him she believes in him.
Throughout How to Get Away with Murder this week, Bonnie is also trying to win back Annalise’s trust. She assures Annalise that she wasn’t trying to betray her and she will always help Annalise. Bonnie also tells her she loves her and our hearts just melted.
The case-of-the-week involved Annalise picking up a pro bono case of a former female soldier, Danielle (Alyssa Diaz). She tells Annalise that she was at a club with her girlfriend when a man continuously harassed them. This, sadly, happens all the time right? Where’s the weird part? Danielle eventually got sick of his berating and slices his throat. Oops.
Simon runs with the idea that they should use PTSD as their defense. This makes him first chair this time around. In court, Annalise and ADA Rene Atwood (Milauna Jackson) have to go head-to-head once again and things aren’t pretty. Rene asked specifically to be put on this case so she could go against Annalise. We sense a rivalry forming. Between this and her sleeping with Nate (Billy Brown), Rene is not our favorite person right now.
Annalise decides to do the cross-examinations and leaves Simon alone. Atwood continuously objects to everything Annalise is saying, which is honestly the most annoying thing ever. Michaela eventually finds Annalise (who is eating chips in a bathroom stall and we’ve never connected to her more) and tells her that she found some more information about Danielle. Danielle was actually working a desk job during the time she claimed she was in combat. Her whole background is a lie. With this information, Annalise wants to make this a mistrial. With a little conniving, the court has to agree to a mistrial.
This case wraps up with Danielle still having to go to military court and attend treatment for a fake substance abuse problem. Annalise tells her she ultimately got the better deal and doing this is much better than rotting in a jail cell.
Although so much is happening with Wallace Mahoney, Frank and their case, there’s still time for the How to Get Away with Murder couples this week. Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) are still broken up and are clearly not over each other still. Oliver went on a date, Connor was not thrilled. Just get back together already.
Elsewhere, Michael and Asher are having the “boyfriend/girlfriend” discuss yet again. A plot line that is being stretched out way too much, but is made better by Asher dancing to “Cotton Eye Joe” in a white t-shirt and blue boxers. We know, the visual is amazing. On a serious note, Asher still can’t get Michaela to commit to more than just sex and leaves. Later on, he ends up in Michaela’s room again and tells her how much he loves her. Michaela finally agrees their relationship is more than just sex and she likes him.
The surprising, jaw dropping, hookup between Frank and Bonnie appears to only be the beginning for How to Get Away with Murder. Wes tells Meggy about Mahoney, but he lies and says he was just a stranger walking by. He later breaks up with Meggy even though she’s very supportive of him. Wes eventually goes to Annalise’s house, steals Frank’s confession tape and heads to Laurel’s apartment. He smashes the tape right in front of her explaining that it would help Frank and Annalise if the tape was just gone. Eventually, this leads to the surprising hookup this week when Laurel and Wes begin kissing and eventually sleep together. This is a long time coming, but we still aren’t sure if she’s really over Frank (even though she says she is).
This isn’t even the biggest shock of the week! After their case-of-the-week wraps, Annalise and Bonnie return home to find Wes has left (he’s with Laurel ladies). Then the news blares on the TV that Wallace Mahoney’s son has turned himself into the police. Everyone obviously panics thinking it’s Wes, but it’s indeed Charles Mahoney. The murder weapon is planted in Charles’ car by Frank.
So, “Who’s Under the Sheet?” We know it’s a male body and the only characters we haven’t in present day are Wes, Frank and Nate. We can’t imagine it being Wes, but then again How to Get Away with Murder has been known to surprise us. Also, after Laurel and Wes’ hookup we’re assuming Laurel’s baby belongs to Wes. This reviewer still isn’t over the major The Walking Dead death and Wes’ death might kill me.
