5 Things to Notice in the “Thor: The Dark World” Trailer
Gavin Gronenthal ’16 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
Last week, the trailer of Thor: The Dark World made its appearance online, showing the first glimpse into the next adventure of Thor. The story, which appears to be loosely based on Thor’s run in with the Dark Elves, had a very ominous feel and looks to be much darker than the previous film. Let’s take a closer look at the five things you should take note about in the trailer. But be warned! Minor spoilers may be ahead…
Jane Foster is headed to Asgard.
As you can see, Natalie Portman is back as Jane Foster, and is pictured above with her Asgardian boyfriend Thor (Chris Hemsworth). They’re in Asgard, for Thor to show her the wonders of where magic and science are one and the same. But what may be more significant is the one brief, jealous look that Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) gives in the trailer. A love triangle could be brewing. It happened in the comics, so don’t be too surprised if it happens here.
As we saw in some early on-set snapshots and in the trailer here, there’s obviously going to be a pretty large battle happening here. This comes as a relief, because while we got some heavy action last time, it simply felt like Thor and his friends were the only ones who actually did anything in Asgard. Hopefully, director Alan Taylor, who is known for his work on Game of Thrones, has decided to let the armies of Asgard clash with the Dark Elves of Svartalfar in one large open field battle and let this become the epic fantasy franchise it should be.
This may be the most significant part of Thor: The Dark World. In the trailer, we not only see the large aforementioned battle placed in what is obviously the more mythical realms of the universe, but we also see a giant, black ship-type object attacking a university campus on earth (see: above). Could it be that Svartalfar is not the only “Dark World” in question here, and that Thor himself must return to Asgrad to stop this darkness from growing any further on earth? This would make for an extremely engaging plot, and would definitely take us on a far more adventurous journey than our last solo outing with the God of Thunder.
Though we only briefly see his face, this trailer gave us the first official look at Malekith, ruler of the dark, portrayed by Christopher Eccleston. He seems to be performing some sort of enchantment on Jane, which is a callback to his first appearance, where he captured a woman named Lorelei and forced Thor to fight for her. However, his servant Algrim the Strong, who will be played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, has yet to make his appearance. In the comics (spoiler alert!!!) Algrim, now under the name Kurse, actually kills Malekith after his former king betrays himby dumping him into a pit of lava. Though this may not happen until a possible third Thor movie, we can’t know for sure, and who knows what crazy stunt Marvel will try to pull here.
So, even though Tom Hiddleston (pictured above) had been cast since the first press release of the movie, the big surprise at the end of the trailer was Loki’s return into the world of Thor, with a very…interesting haircut. Regardless, Loki seems to be less of a villain in this capacity, stating that Thor is “desperate” to come to him for aid. In the comics, Loki has been known to help the Asgardians in the past (see the end of Marvel’s Siege event), but rest assured he always has a trick or two up his sleeves.
So, those are the five things we think you should watch out for in the trailer. Will our predictions be right? How does this play into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We’ll have to wait and see. Thor: The Dark World comes to theaters on November 8, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Anthony Hopkins.
