SDCC ’13: Trinity War
Michael Moccio ’16 / Emertainment Monthly Editor
Official Description: Trinity War rocks the DC Universe to its core in the comic book event of the summer! Get an inside look at the War of the Justice Leagues on a panel featuring the crossover’s all-star creators Ray Fawkes (Justice League Dark, Trinity of Sin: Pandora), Geoff Johns (Aquaman, Justice League, Justice League of America), Matt Kindt (Justice League of America), Jeff Lemire (Green Arrow, Justice League Dark), and DC Comics’s senior editor Brian Cunningham.
Trinity War is the new event in DC Comics, with all three Justice Leagues–the original, Justice League of America, and Justice League Dark–coming at one another in all out conflict. The concept of a “trinity” is clearly shown in the crossover event: the trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman; the trinity of the three Leagues; and, the Trinity of Sin–Pandora, the Phantom Stranger, and the Question.
The Phantom Stranger and the Question are no strangers to the DC Universe.
The Phantom Stranger has always been a messenger, alerting our heroes to impending crises, but never allowed to directly intervene. In the New 52, he takes a much larger role as a punished Judas Iscariot, paying off his debt by helping the Presence with the universe’s grand design.
The Question is also portrayed differently, as he was originally a man known as Vic Sage. Now, however, he is a man punished for his sins, doomed to wander the Earth answering questions. The latest question on his mind: who is “the evil behind the evil?”
The panel opened with several key bits of revealed information. Next week, Justice League Dark #22 hits stores–the issues will feature Swamp Thing and Dr. Fate, both characters making their first “main Earth” New 52 appearance. We can only speculate what role they’ll have, but if the Swamp Thing gets involved, then perhaps the repercussions of Trinity War will affect even the primordial Green.
We’re also teased with hints at future events in the Trinity War. Fawkes said, “Constantine will see the wizard facing off with Billy Batson and trying to steal the power of Shazam… he is at least partially successful. There’s no dirty tactic that John won’t stoop to. If he needs to take the power from a hero, from a thirteen year-old boy, he’ll do it.”
Besides the information on Trinity War, the panelists hinted at the future Forever Evil event. When asked a question about Boost Gold, Johns said,”We love Booster, but he’s not in Trinity War. There is something in Forever Evil #1 that connects to him though.”
On Pandora’s role in bringing the New 52 into creation, Fawkes said, “It will come up and be addressed directly after Trinity War. Someone even directly says to her that people believe she’s responsible for the creation of the universe, and that will come up again right after the crossover.”
No other major news was included.
