Sabrina Carpenter’s “emails i can’t send” Tour Review

“Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this.” Yes, one must look to the wise words of Nicole Kidman’s beloved AMC advertisement to sum up Sabrina Carpenter’s sold-out “emails i can’t send” tour in a single sentence.  

It takes an extremely talented artist to make a concert featuring songs from a heartbreak album feel like a dazzling and exciting event. Carpenter achieved this feat not only through her high-energy stage presence but also by making her audience feel united and included in her show. Before the concert began, the audiences’ collection of screams could be heard to a carefully selected pre-show playlist culminating with Taylor Swift’s infamous “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)(Taylor’s Version).” Carpenter included the audience in her show in several ways. She focused on one fan who had recently been dumped over FaceTime, choosing her cover performance, Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” based on their conversation. 

To add to the intimate atmosphere of her show, Carpenter shared several anecdotes detailing the inspiration for her latest songs. One particularly memorable intro was that for “Tornado Warnings,” in which Carpenter sings about ignoring the signs of ending a relationship that is not meant to be. Through sharing such personal experiences, Carpenter created a unique bond with her audience by relating to the heartbreaks of others. 

Heart imagery was prominent throughout the entire show – from the massive LED-lit heart behind Carpenter in center stage to the dozens of heart balloons that were dumped onto the audience at the end of the show. These symbols highlight that this tour was truly a celebration for anyone who has ever overcome heartbreak. 

The audience greatly enjoyed Carpenter’s setlist, which included almost every track off of emails i can’t send as well as some old fan favorites such as “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying” and “Sue Me.” Carpenter ended the show strong by saving her biggest hit off the album, “because i loved a boy” for the encore. She left the crowd in so much anticipation for this heartbreak anthem that their ear piercing screams rang throughout the venue. 

Carpenter’s tour was not to be missed, regardless of whether you are a new or long-time fan. Her performance was relatable and her stage presence created an exhilarating audience experience.
