Pretty Little Liars: Season 4 Premiere Review

Larianny Perez / Emertainment Monthly Writer ’17
A lot of hype has been created for the season four premiere of Pretty Little Liars. Pretty Little Liars is a show about four girls, Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson), and Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) who receive constant text messages from an anonymous A character who knows all of their pretty dirty secrets. The girls are getting closer to figuring out who this A character is and the mysterious girl in the red coat, or red coat for short. Season three ended with many cliffhangers including the girls opening the trunk to a police car and gasping. What was in the trunk? Why did they gasp? Is it yet another death? Is it one of A’s doings? No one knew and everyone was excited to find out what was in the trunk, who red coat is, and who A is! That is what season four is all about; answer all of our agonizing questions.
Season four started off right where it left off: the opening of the police officer’s car trunk and what was in it was finally revealed. That was not the only thing that was revealed. In season two we found out that A is a group of people and not just one person. A is constantly recruiting more people including Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish): Hanna’s ex-best friend, Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen): Spencer’s boyfriend, and Spencer herself. They each have their own reasons for joining, but not even the people apart of the A team know who their boss, red coat, is. At the end of season three, with an almost encounter of red coat, the house Mona, Hanna, Aria, and Emily were in catches on fire and they miss their chance of finding out who red coat is. Or did they? Mona and Hanna believe they saw who red coat is and believe it is Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse). Alison, or Ali for short, was a friend of theirs who was the one who actually brought all of them together. She passed away when she was fifteen, before the time the pretty little liar’s show takes place. So, how can they see a dead friend? Is she not dead? Are they seeing a ghost? No one knows yet. Whenever they get the chance to discover who read coat is something happens. But red coat is revealed to them when they are slightly unconscious so that the girls are not fully certain if what they saw was real or not.
So why would red coat, the one who is trying to ruin their lives, save them from a fire? Possibly because she is not finished with them yet! Red coat and A had more tricks up their sleeves. Yet another body turns up dead. Is it a coincidence that he is also in the N.A.T club? A club that in Latin means “Nos Animadverto Totus” and in English means “We See All.” It seems like almost everyone in the N.A.T. club has died, except for one person, Jenna Marshall (Tammin Sursok). Jenna pretended to be blind for a long time, but at one point she was. She became blind because of a prank Ali was trying to pull on Toby for spying on them. She was accompanied by the four main characters, neither one of them knowing the extent to their prank. That night of the explosion will be forever be known as “The Jenna Thing.” Once Jenna got her vision back, she pretended to be blind because she claimed it was her only protection. That people will not see her as a threat and leave her alone.
Many more secrets were revealed and I believe that it was a good episode to start season four. A familiar face came back to stay this episode and it is Alison’s mom. She was a character to watch out for. In one scene she was staring out her window into Spencer’s room. Why did she move back into her old house all of a sudden? Why does she look suspicious? Is she also part of the A team or possibly even red coat? Is red coat really Ali and her mom knows she is still alive? This episode did a great job in answer some questions the audience had but they did an excellent job arising more!
Pretty Little Liars never falls short of keeping me at the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next. My favorite part would have to have been when Mona joined the girls since she was in the fire as well and still had not found out who red coat was.  Right after the opening scene, they all received a text message from A, including Mona, meaning that now she is in A’s target list again. Knowing that she was back on their level got my blood flowing but not in excitement, in fear. What if she still believes she is part of the A team? What if she plans on betraying the girls again just for a chance to see red coat? She tried showing compassion when she bought them all coffee and allowed them to see her lair after telling them everything she knows. She also tried fixing her friendship with Hanna by giving her a video she took from the cop car. Can Mona ever be trusted? We’ll soon find out in the upcoming episodes!
