Listen Up: “The Thing” by Atumpan

Summer is finally here in full force, and for many, this means one thing: time for a vacation. But if you’re anything like me and don’t exactly have the funds for a grand tropical getaway right now, don’t worry. Just press play on Ghanaian musician Atumpan’s “The Thing” and you will be whisked away on a mental vacation thanks to this epic Afrobeat track.

“The Thing” is definitely an Afrobeat song, combining elements of hip-hop and funk with more traditional African percussion styles. All of these qualities work together to create a distinctly tropical sound perfect for tanning poolside or playing a few rounds of beach volleyball. And as if this isn’t enough to get you to listen to “The Thing,” there’s the added bonus of the music video, which features some crazy dance moves and more than a few Cosby sweater-esque patterns in the background.
