The Wolverine

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Will Yun Lee
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 126 minutes
What to Expect: This highly anticipated summer movie is finally here. The Wolverine centers again on Logan from the X-men franchise. He is sent to Japan to help a friend dating back from WWII. Along the way he has to fight corrupt politicians and corporate bosses, as well as his own inner demons. This movie has been set to showcase not only action-packed scenes, but also some of the deeper struggles Logan must face because of what he is. This movie has gotten a lot of mixed reviews. Some critics praised the movie because of its balance of emotional moments and action packed sequences. Others see the movie as a disappointment and a deviation from what makes Wolverine, Wolverine. Looking at the trailers, the movie looks like a pretty exciting action flick. I would definitely go see it, but I doubt it will stand out as the best X-Men film. Also, as a note, don’t leave the theater right after the credits start to roll. There is a small teaser at the end that you don’t want to miss.

The To Do List

Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons, Bill Hader, Alia Shawkat
Rating: R
Running Time: 104 minutes
What to Expect: This film features the story of a girl, Aubrey Plaza, who was focused mainly on academics in high school and feels she missed out on having much of a social life. So, she creates a list of things she wants to do in order to be more experienced by the time she gets to college.  This raunchy comedy has a really great cast. From the stars of Parks and Recreation to Alia Shawkat and Bill Hader, this film has the potential to be really funny. The trailer depicts the movie as your typical teen comedy (a female version of American Pie), but hopefully the acting can set this one from the rest. However, if you’re not a fan of crass or lewd humor this movie is definitely not for you.

Blue Jasmine (Opening in select cities)

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 98 minutes
What to Expect: With a director like Woody Allen and accomplished actors like Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin in leading roles, this movie is bound to be great. The story centers on Jasmine (Cate Blanchett), who loses all of her money and is a victim of a very materialistic culture. Jasmine moves in with her sister, but is not mentally sound while coping with the fact that she has lost everything. Director Woody Allen adds his personal flair, and if you love character-driven movies, this is definitely one for you. The relationships between Jasmine, her sister, and the people around her are captivating from what I can see from the trailer. This movie doesn’t have any train crashes or huge explosions like most of this year’s summer films, so it could be a refreshing time at the movies.
