Next month, American Horror Story returns to FX for another bewitching season. Now in its third year, this critically acclaimed series is looking to spook spellbound viewers once again.
Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk first captivated an audience in 2011 with the “Murder House”, a haunted house in Los Angeles recently bought by the Harmon family. The next year, viewers checked into Briarcliffe, a mental asylum for the criminally insane. AHS gained a wider audience this year as it followed the stories of inmates, doctors, and nuns who occupied Briarcliffe.
This year, viewers are transported to 1830s, 300 years after the end of the Salem witch trials. Those who survived the hunt are scarce and are in danger of going extinct altogether. A school is opened in New Orleans to teach protection against a voodoo practicing tribe. The school, which is run by Cordelia and her mother Fiona, summons witches from all over to join the coven.
Two time Academy Award winning actress Jessica Lange returns for a third time to play one of the lead roles. Lange will portray Fiona, the long-absent supreme witch who returns to New Orleans to help her daughter run the coven. Her daughter Cordelia is played by another returning cast member, Sarah Paulson. Other returners include Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters, who shared a popular romance among viewers in season one. Frances Conroy and Denis O’Hare will also be returning this season.
New cast members will also be making an appearance in the Coven. Kathy Bates (Titanic, Fried Green Tomatoes) plays the role of the notorious Madame LaLaurie, a historic serial killer of African American slaves. Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got to Do with It?, Malcolm X) plays Marie Laveau, a real-life Creole woman from New Orleans who practiced voodoo. Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Emma Roberts (We’re the Millers, Aquamarine), and Grey Damon (Friday Night Lights) are also new cast members joining the third season.
Anybody who has seen American Horror Story before knows that they are in for quite a treat this October. American Horror Story: Coven premieres at 10pm EST October 7th on FX.
