Miley Cyrus “Bangerz” Review
Alyssa Audrey Taylor ’17 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
Miley Cyrus has had an eventful summer. From the releases of “We Can’t Stop” , “Wrecking Ball” and their accompanying music videos to her outlandish VMA’s performance, her Saturday Night Live performance and her documentary, it’s been impossible to miss her and her big dancing bears. After a hiatus of three years Miley dropped Bangerz, to much anticipation. Upon first listen I was confused. On my second listen I had identified my favorite tracks. And by the third time, I had gotten what Miley was saying, ahem singing, and I had fallen in love with the entire album.
First off, while this is an album that has elements hop hop, R&B, pop, and country it doesn’t actually fit in any category. It crosses over genres as easy as swears flow out of Miley’s mouth. Secondly there is a story here- one that isn’t finished. It’s a story of self-discovery, it’s a broken love story, and it’s a party anthem. While not every album on the track is great (I love Nelly but ‘4×4’ could’ve been left on the cutting room floor) every song is definitely listenable. The album is best listened to in it’s explicit deluxe edition form.
Starting with “Adore You”, a hauntingly beautiful love song that showcases her talent and the love she had for Liam, the album is full of gems. Although “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” are virtually unescapable at this point, they’re still great songs. SMS (Bangerz) and Love Money Party are infectious and even though they’re not the best they get stuck in your head and they’re fun party songs.
However the standout tracks are as follows.
“#GETITRIGHT” seems to be a favorite of everyone’s, as Miley sings openly about being thirsty, and wanting to “get it on” with her lover.
[spotify id=”spotify:track:1u6GCyU5atrzrAqwC55og1″ width=”300″ height=”380″ /]“Drive” is about broken promises, about a broken love, and if we’re able to read between the lines, about how hurt she is after everything settles.
[spotify id=”spotify:track:6aVeSCobcOjIkMFARN9B7l” width=”300″ height=”380″ /]“Do My Thang” is a great song , and not only does Miley sing, she raps comfortably, channeling southern hip hop all the way.
[spotify id=”spotify:track:6n2GPvMJtFZ4ckoc9EWHMx” width=”300″ height=”380″ /]“Someone Else”, following the almost great “Maybe You’re Right” is the finisher to the standard edition, and is honestly my second favorite track. Miley truly is someone else, but the song is about how Liam leaves, takes her heart and as a result what she’s left with. The lyrics and vocals are on point.
[spotify id=”spotify:track:6aGntrw4eXQGF2PfjhBEED” width=”300″ height=”380″ /]The best song, however is “Rooting For My Baby”. The vocals, lyrics, production and overall feeling of the song is great. I’m perplexed as to why it wasn’t on the Standard Edition, but nonetheless it’s the best song on the album.
