How I Met Your Dad: More Kindred Spirit than Direct Descendant

Shepard Price ’17 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
How I Met Your Dad, is a real thing.
However, not in the way most fans of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) would expect. The show is not featuring the mother, rather a cast of new characters that will not be introduced in the original show at all. It will essentially be How I Met Your Mother, but from the female perspective. The pilot episode was ordered by CBS recently. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, creators of How I Met Your Mother, will also be listed as creators of this new show, along with a surprising new creator, Emily Spivey. Spivey was the creator of Up All Night, the show with Will Arnett and Christina Applegate that ended tragically after Applegate left and NBC canceled it. The new mix of creators is surprising because of them having worked with two different networks, but last year, Spivey signed a two year deal with 20th Century Fox, the studio behind How I Met Your Mother and now How I Met Your Dad. The show is a “kindred spirit” of How I Met Your Mother, instead of a direct spin-off.
The Pros and Cons of the show are as follows:
Pros:

  • The show is not a direct spin-off, allowing for more creative freedom in the pilot
  • Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the force behind How I Met Your Mother, are also involved with the new show
  • The show is based on a whole new group of characters, allowing for new adventures
  • Many people have been asking about the necessity of a spin-off, and since it is more “kindred spirit” than direct descendant, there is a level of new in the show

Cons:

  • How I Met Your Mother has had nine seasons of adventures, so how much more can How I Met Your Dad do without treading the same water
  • There is no further exploration of the character of the Mother planned, which may disappoint HIMYM fans.
  • None of the actors of HIMYM are planned to return, another disappointing factor for many fans.
