Sony has announced Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to adapt and direct Console Wars, based on an upcoming novel by Blake Harris. Scott Rudin, who produced Moneyball and The Social Network, is set to produce Console Wars follows the story of how upstart company Sega took on Nintendo, the biggest gaming company in the world.
It will be interesting to see what direction the film takes, especially as Rogen and Goldberg are traditionally known for comedies like This is The End and Superbad. Will the narrative be told as a comedy or a drama? The book appears to be written from the perspective of Sega, indicating that the movie could be structured as a tragedy.
As any major fan of video games today knows, Sega isn’t the force it was in the ‘90s. Sega’s and Nintendo’s battle endured years across all media. Choosing a side was an important decision to make as a kid—you were either a Sega fan or a Nintendo fan, Sonic or Mario. The rivalry was considered over after Sega released its last console, the Dreamcast, in 1998. After the Dreamcast failed, Sega abandoned the hardware production business for software only, casting its characters in games by other companies like Nintendo.
There are a multitude of angles for Rogen and Goldberg to consider when approaching this project, as the rivalry existed on so many levels, spanning important meetings in boardrooms to school recess.
In addition to the movie, a documentary on the subject will be produced by Harris, Rogen, and Goldberg.
