After months of speculation the cast of True Detective season two has grown exponentially. In a statement by HBO on November 24th, it was revealed that Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly have officially joined the cast.
True Detective became one of the most powerful and popular television shows of the 2013-2014 television season. Similar to the story structure of American Horror Story, each season of True Detective has a different cast and story. During its first season, True Detective followed Detective Rustin Spencer “Rust” Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and his partner Detective Martin Eric “Marty” Hart (Woody Harrelson) as they investigate a series of murders in Louisiana. The introductory season was met with critical acclaim. The series was nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards and took home the prize for Outstanding Directing for Cary Fukunaga’s work.
These three new actors are no strangers to the spotlight. Rachel McAdams is best known for her work in The Notebook, Mean Girls and most recently the Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Little has been revealed about McAdams’ True Detective character except that she is a detective with compromised ethics. Sounds interesting. Taylor Kitsch has also found his fame in recent years. He is most notable for his work as Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights as well as Bruce Niles in Ryan Murphy’s TV movie adaptation of The Normal Heart. His character is slated to be a war veteran running from a difficult past. Lastly, Kelly Reilly, last seen in the ABC short-lived drama Black Box, will take on the role of Jordan, a former D-list actress and Frank’s wife. These three incredible actors join Vince Vaughn (The Internship) and Colin Farrell (Saving Mr. Banks) who will take on the lead roles of Frank and Ray respectively.
With such hype surrounding the second season of True Detective the show has lined up some truly talented A list actors. After a remarkable first season, it will be interesting to see where the show will grow from here. Production has already started on the season with HBO aiming at a summer release date. Will True Detective continue to soar for HBO? Only more information and the first episode will give viewers that answer.
