Trailer Analysis: 'House of Cards' Season 3

Rachel Smith ‘16 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
House of Cards is one of those shows where you think you know what is going to happen, but then they’ll completely shock you and you won’t be mad that you were totally wrong. This season looks like much of the same but the only thing for certain is, things are not looking good for the new President and his First Lady.
Kevin Spacey rightfully won the Golden Globe for his role as Frances Underwood and this season, the diabolical politician seems to have finally run out of luck. The trailer for the new season debuting February 27th, is only 45 seconds long. Just enough to get fans back on the edge of their seats and ready to binge watch. It opens with Frank Underwood’s voiceover wisdom, bringing the fans back to the familiarity of the layout of the show. His words are sharp and definitely set the tone for what’s to come: “Holding it all together when the stakes are this high.”
There are new faces in the trailer that look like this seasons obstacle for Frank and Claire to crush but a certain new guy might be too much for them to handle since he seems to be breaking up the powerful dynamic duo. Robin Wright’s pained faced clips seem to indicate that perhaps Frances has gone overboard in his siege of The White House.
The writing appears to be keeping up with its past seasons of artistic brilliance but with so many familiar characters seemingly out of the picture, will the new season hold up to its former glory as Netflix’s flagship dramatic series? That is for you to decide but from the trailer, it would seem this season of House of Cards will be just as beautifully dark and include the shock value fans know and love. The camera work is soft and deliberate while the dark colors seem to shed a dim light on the new roles the Underwoods’ have acquired, staying true to its usual form.
Just when you’re wondering what exactly could be the plot line for season 3 the trailer ends with the lines, “We’re murderers Frances.” To which her husband responds in that classic Frank Underwood vindictive, stern voice, “We’re survivors.” We all know he’s a murderer (RIP Zoe Barnes and Peter Russo) but what has Claire done? Fans will be anxiously waiting to find out February 27th.
