‘Suicide Squad’ Teaser Promises Unique Thrills

The film is based around a team of super villains that perform certain high-risk missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. Interestingly, most of the characters in the upcoming film are unknown to the casual viewer. Yet there is anchor with the Joker, and to a lesser extent, Harley Quinn, which is perhaps why the trailer focuses mainly on the pair. The cast, which includes Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Cara Delvengine and Viola Davis, is all solid and seem to be in their element.
The trailer itself is eerie, yet there is an air of mystery to it, which is to its benefit. It is satisfying yet more is craved. What kind of missions will they go on? What will the team dynamic be? How will audiences be introduced to the characters, and how will empathy form for them in spite of the things they have done? After all, like it or not, audiences are often more drawn to the villains.
The final scene is especially chilling, and one can only wonder how Jared Leto’s Joker will compare to Heath Ledger’s iconic turn a mere eight years ago. He’s creepy enough, and the manaical laugh is spot on. Who is he torturing? Is it Harley Quinn? Or, in light of the Batman v Superman trailer, Jason Todd?
One thing is for certain — August 5th can’t come soon enough.
