For all my life, I have been a fan of Tinker Bell. I watched nearly every movie at the El Capitan Theatre, the only movie theatre that showed the films, I played the now defunct Pixie Hollow online game, and my senior quote was “All it takes is faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust.” So naturally, I was very excited by the announcement of the novel Wings of Starlight by Allison Saft.

Released on February 4, 2025, Wings of Starlight is a prequel to the Tinker Bell movies released from 2008 to 2015. Specifically, it focuses on a relationship introduced in the movie Secret of the Wings— the romance between Queen Clarion and Milori, the Lord of Winter. They have been separated for a long time as the air of the Winter realm is too cold for warm weather fairies and the warmer realms are too warm for winter fairies.

The book takes place years before Tinker Bell was born from a baby’s first laugh. It follows Clarion as she anticipates her upcoming coronation, and Milorim who holds the position of Warden of the Winter Woods and guards monsters deep in the winter ice. They must come together to stop the monsters putting all of Pixie Hollow in danger, and as they spend more time with each other, they form a romantic connection, despite the fact that it puts them both in danger.

This novel was a great way to return to the world of Pixie Hollow. Being a young adult novel, the story still stays family-friendly and fits with other Tinker Bell media while also holding the interest of older fans. Allison Saft does a great job of returning to this world so many people love by providing a sense of nostalgia. We get to learn more intricate details about the Pixie Hollow political system, specifically about the rarest fairies of them all, governing talent fairies, while still staying true to the world we know. I loved getting to see the relationship between Clarion and Milori form. The book is great for Tinker Bell fans, but also stands on its own as an effective young adult fantasy romance.

The last movie from this franchise was Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast released in 2015, which was also the last film from Disneytoon Studios, a studio that specialized in making direct-to-DVD Disney sequels. The studio closed in June 2018 after years of mismanagement and allegations of sexual misconduct against the lead creative officer.

Because of this, a big question of Tinker Bell’s history is still left unanswered— how did she become the companion of Peter Pan? There are many Peter Pan easter eggs throughout the film series: Wendy showing up briefly in Tinker Bell as “You Can Fly” plays from her music box, as well as discovering the origin of Captain Hook and his feud with Tick-Tock the crocodile in The Pirate Fairy. Now that Wings of Starlight has been released, Disney has opened up the door to see more from Tinker Bell and her friends. Maybe one day we will get to see more of Tinker Bell’s story play out in novel form.

However, the only way this could happen is if there is a demand for such stories. So, if you are at all interested in returning to Pixie Hollow, I would definitely recommend picking up Wings of Starlight from your local bookstore.
