After nearly a year of waiting, Legend of Korra fans finally have a trailer for season 3. Unfortunately for Nickelodeon it wasn’t exactly released on the best circumstances. Last week, four episodes from the upcoming season leaked online through the Latin American Nickelodeon website, MundoNick. Co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino voiced their disappointment over the leak on tumblr, but they are no strangers to this type of disappointment.
Nickelodeon’s treatment of both Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra has led to multiple leaks in the past, from episodes being released in different countries before it airs in the US, to the entire series finale of Avatar being spoiled when a novelization of the last four episodes came out months before it was actually aired. One quarter of the new season being found on the Internet before it even gets a release date seems to be par for the course at this point.
The following day Nickelodeon released the trailer as some sort of mollifying gesture for the fandom. The trailer itself was highly exciting with a lot of hints towards developments that could change the very foundation of the series. The trailer gives us a look at the new villains of the season, which includes a waterbender who appears to be using water whips as arms, a woman with the same symbol as Combustion Man from the third season of Avatar the Last Airbender, and a man who appears to be using airbending.
The implications of the several people airbending in the trailer are really interesting in that it is basically completely overturning the original series. There are many theories as to why these new characters can airbend but the only way to find out for sure is to wait and find out by watching the show. Hopefully Nickelodeon will announce the release date for the next season at San Diego Comic Con as they usually do each year.
