The Force will be strong with gamers next month, as Electronic Arts announced that the reveal of the highly anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront will come during Star Wars Celebration from April 16th to the 19th. An announcement on the EA website read: “You’ve been patient, young Padawans, and soon your patience will be rewarded.”
For years, fans have waited with bated breath for any scrap of news regarding a continuation of this beloved series. The Star Wars: Battlefront series started in 2004 with the release of the original game on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Windows. A sequel, Star Wars: Battlefront II, was released for consoles in 2005. Both of these games were praised by gamers for bringing iconic battles of the Star Wars saga to life and allowing you to play as some of your favorite factions and characters from the Star Wars universe, from stormtroopers and rebel soldiers to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Several games in the series were released on handheld game consoles, and rumors of a third game for consoles circulated for years. There was even pre-alpha game footage leaked at one point, but due to a myriad of issues, Star Wars: Battlefront III never came to be.
When Disney acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. and its subsidiaries in October 2012, gamers were hopeful that Battlefront would finally come to the next generation of consoles. But those hopes seemed to be dashed when LucasArts was shut down and all games that the company was working on were suspended indefinitely. Then, at E3 in 2013, EA released a short teaser trailer of a new Battlefront game, simply entitled Star Wars: Battlefront.
So, Battlefront is happening, and gamers will be getting their first look this April. But what will that look consist of? A trailer? A demo? Both? Something else entirely? Given how big of a deal this is, it’s doubtful that EA would just give us a trailer. They would only make this much fuss to show Star Wars fans what a galaxy far, far away looks like on next-generation consoles. Most importantly, this will be EA’s first chance to show gamers that they can make a good Star Wars game worthy of the legacy of LucasArts; and if it’s happening at the Star Wars Celebration, the work they’ve done will hopefully be pretty impressive.
Star Wars: Battlefront will hit stores sometime late this year, likely around the release of the new film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Gamers and Star Wars fans will catch the first look at the game this April at the Star Wars Celebration. May the Force be with us, always.
Correction: An earlier version of this article said in the title that Star Wars: Battlefront would be released on Star Wars Celebration, however that is incorrect the first look of the game will be revealed on Star Wars Celebration.
Your title says RELEASED. That’s not a release date. Get your terminology straight if you’re gonna report on gaming.
It’s called click bait
And it makes me sick
Hi Alan and Jmny, We apologize for using the wrong word in the title. We added a correction last night. Again we apologize for the mix up.
