Your End of Summer Pop Playlist

It’s finally time to say goodbye to summer. Maybe you’ve held off until the last possible day, refusing to call summer over when school started. But now that the equinox marking the official start of fall has come and gone and the colder weather is starting to set in, let’s say goodbye to summer with these songs.

Youngstown, “Away With The Summer Days”

Start with this hidden gem from Youngstown. It’s wistful and cheesy in the way that only an early 2000s boy band can be.

Allstar Weekend, “Blame It On September”

In a less cheesy, slightly more angsty display of emotion, Allstar Weekend want to find something to blame for the inevitable end of their summer fling. That thing ends up being the very arrival of autumn, which blows in even as the memories linger.

5 Seconds of Summer, “San Francisco”

The Australian foursome get nostalgic on this track from their second album. This one is for when the thought of a place brings back a flood of memories.

Automatic Loveletter, “The Day That Saved Us”

And sometimes it’s not a place, but a day that’s saturated with sentimentality. The strong imagery brings back the salt, the sand, and the sound of the waves, magnified tenfold by the nuances of lead singer Juliet Simms’s voice.

Yellowcard, “Ocean Avenue”

It’s hard to find a twenty-something today whose adolescence didn’t feature this song. One of the group’s best-known songs, “Ocean Avenue” yearns for a simpler time when things were easier. Don’t we all.

Dashboard Confessional, “So Long, So Long”

The entirety of Dashboard Confessional’s sixth album, Dusk And Summer, feels like a journey through the stages of a summer love. This track recalls the exact moment of goodbye, and the result is this heart-wrenching mid-tempo ballad.

Taylor Swift, “Tim McGraw”

Remember when Swift was a country artist? This song was the first the world heard of her, where she asks her love to remember her after he’s gone.

Lana Del Rey, “Summertime Sadness”

It’s just not an end-of-summer playlist without “Summertime Sadness.” Much like the title indicates, it suggests that goodbye to a summer lover and the romantic despair that’s typical Lana.
