A Very Broadway Christmas Playlist

It’s that time of year again – snow is falling, hot cocoa is on the stove, and it’s time for some Christmas music. Looking for a way to Broadway-ify your playlist this year? Emertainment Monthly has you covered. Check out these festive favorites from our staff to get you in the holiday spirit!

1. “We Need A Little Christmas” – Mame

Who wouldn’t want to spend their Christmas with Auntie Mame?! Now THAT’S a Christmas party we want to crash!

2. “Surabaya Santa” – Songs for a New World

Hilarious? Yes. Festive? Absolutely. For a more subdued Christmas song, check out “Christmas Lullaby” – another selection from this Jason Robert Brown song cycle.

3. “Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher” – Billy Elliot

Not exactly the politest tune, but this song will definitely get stuck in your head. For a very long while. Don’t forget to check out the Elton John version as well!

4. “Hard Candy Christmas” – Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

Dolly Parton made this song famous, but it got its start on the stage. A perfect song for that friend who just hates the holiday season.

5. “Christmas Bells” – Rent

No Broadway playlist would be complete without a selection from Rent and this one is no exception! It may be a filler song in the musical, but its still close to our heart.

6. “Nuttycracker Suite” – Thoroughly Modern Millie

Nothing says “Christmas party” better than a little dance number. Add in superstars Sutton Foster and Gavin Creel and you have a Broadway dream party!

7. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” – Meet Me in Saint Louis

Little known fact: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” was originally a showtune! The song was performed by Judy Garland in the classic MGM movie musical.

8. “Turkey Lurkey Time” – Promises, Promises

In the words of one of our personal favorites, “make a wish and may all your wishes come true.”

Merry Christmas from your friends at Emertainment Monthly!
