Who is Jonah Kagen and Why Should You See Him in Concert?

On February 1st, Jonah Kagen played a concert at the Sinclair in Cambridge. Kagen is a 26 year old country and folk-pop artist from Savannah Georgia. This concert is a part of his tour that goes until October 29th. Kagen is one of those artists where you don’t realize how many of his songs you are already familiar with until you start

listening to them. His song “The Roads” was very popular on Tik Tok for a while and he also has many other great songs such as “God Needs the Devil” and “Save My Soul.”
Jonah does a lot of things in an unconventional manner. For example, he produces his own music out of an Airstream that he has converted into a studio. In concert, he arranges his set list to tell a distinct story, but his set list is just part of the concert. Kagen spent more time on stage telling stories and cracking jokes than playing his music. This helped the concert have a closer feel that allowed it to resonate with audiences.
Additionally, he spent a lot of time talking about his Mom. She is a very big part of his life and even does a lot of behind the scenes tasks for his music, such as packaging merch orders. Him sharing this information created a greater sense of personability for him as an artist.

Throughout the concert, he showed just how human he is, from sharing life experiences both through talking and his music, to telling stories about random people the band has met on tour.
Throughout the concert, he made a point to involve the audience. His song “Save My Soul” turned into a call and response song. He also would constantly respond when people called things out to him and asked the audience questions throughout the show.
If you decide to go to a Jonah Kagen show—which you should—, be prepared for more than just a show. Be prepared for an experience. He is on tour until October 29th so try to catch him! He will return to Boston on September 18th. If you can’t, give his music a listen!
