With Halloween just around the corner, the Emertainment Monthly Stage Section has decided to give you a little nudge of creativity with the Top 10 Broadway-Themed Halloween Costumes.
10. Hedwig (Hedwig and the Angry Inch)

This musical stunned the Broadway community this year when Neil Patrick Harris commanded the stage as the transgender rocker Hedwig. The musical is one of the biggest revivals in recent years and it’s time Hedwig made an appearance at your crazy costume party. So grab your gold stilettos, jean mini skirt, and some gummy bears and parade around town as one of the biggest internationally ignored song stylists in the world.
9. Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins)

Julie Andrews may have popularized this marvelous character back in the 1964 Disney movie, however the success of the Disney Broadway musical has brought everyone’s favorite nanny back to life. This musical was one of the biggest successes for Disney and helped introduce this amazing, heart-warming story to a new generation of children. So grab your grandmother’s old carpetbag, a snazzy black umbrella, and just a spoonful of sugar to make this one exciting Halloween.
8. Pippin (Pippin)

Broadway’s extraordinary prince, Pippin, makes a great costume for this Halloween season. With the 2013 revival and now national tour in full swing, this high flying musical brings the amazing story of Pippin, a prince trying to find where he belongs, to a new audience. The 2013 Tony Award-winning production starring Matthew James Thomas as Pippin and Patina Miller as the Leading Player has entranced audiences around the country. So make a splash this Halloween season by donning a crown, some chainmail, and an outrageous sense of adventure with Pippin.
7. Sally Bowles (Cabaret)

Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! With the lovely, hilarious, and talented Emma Stone stepping into Sally Bowles shoes on Broadway this November, this costume will be a perfect way to show your support. The current revival starring Alan Cumming entices audiences and brings the production back to life. Sally is a troublesome, naughty, and downright intriguing character and perfect for this Halloween season.
6. Phantom (The Phantom of the Opera)

One of the most beloved and downright mysterious characters in Broadway history, the Phantom, will make the perfect intriguing Halloween costume. Hailing from the longest-running musical of all time, the Phantom is a well-known character to all. The Phantom of the Opera has played close to 12,000 performances and continues to amaze the globe with its operatic score and stunning set design. The Phantom costume is quite simple. All you need is half of a white facemask, a flowing cape, and the knack for hiding in dark spaces.
5. A Playbill
How great would it be to show your pride for your favorite Broadway musical by actually wearing a playbill? One of the biggest costumes Broadway fans love creating is a Playbill showcasing their favorite musical or play. This costume involves a little more effort, but hey, who doesn’t love sitting on the floor painting Idina Menzel’s face like the modern Sistine Chapel? So grab a lot of paint, a nice poster board and show off your creative skills with this homemade masterpiece.
4. Elder Price (The Book of Mormon)

Have you ever wanted to travel around Africa preaching the word of God? No? How about just preaching about Broadway musicals while trick-or-treating? Well, either way dressing up as Elder Price this Halloween is the perfect costume. Coming from the 2011 Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon, Elder Price is a great costume for people of all ages. So, grab a white button down shirt, a black tie, the Book of Mormon, and begin preaching about this insanely hilarious musical.
3. A Newsie (Newsies)

Want to be the King of New York this Halloween season? Jack Kelly and the entire Newsies gang are the perfect costume for either one person or an entire group of friends. Although the Broadway production recently closed to a tearful group of “fansies,” the US National tour is in full swing. What a perfect way to show the newspaper-loving, dance-crazy Newsies boys how much you love them with this Halloween costume.

This costume never gets old. Year after year, little girls are squeezed into little red dresses and curly red wigs and asked to sing the remarkable song “Tomorrow” as they trick-or-treat. No matter how old Annie gets it will always be a classic children’s musical that sparked a costume phenomenon. Annie is the perfect costume. Whether you are young, old, or somewhere in between, donning a cute dress and belting this classic will make everyone smile.

The most popular Halloween costume since the musical’s debut in 2004, Elphaba, has had a bewitching effect on girls. Everyone voluntarily slaps on at least three coats of bright green paint and parades around town every Halloween. This amazing costume can be seen almost everywhere on Halloween as new groups of Broadway fanatics are introduced to the amazing songs and dances of Wicked. It’s hard to see this Halloween costume never being number one, as it continues to Defy Gravity and soar to new heights year after year. No one is ever going to bring Elphaba down.
