Samuel L. Jackson. Kurt Russell. Jennifer Jason Leigh. Walton Goggins. Demián Bichir. Tim Roth. Michael Madsen. Bruce Dern. They, along with Channing Tatum (in an undisclosed role) make up the primary cast for Quentin Tarantino’s next film, The Hateful Eight.
Quentin Tarantino films always include much fanfare up their releases, and this one promises to be no different.
While the famed director always has a number of projects gestating (some include a ‘30s gangster film and what he simply refers to as “an Earthbound sci-fi film”), this one was actually dangerously close to being shelved earlier this year after the script was leaked online. Thankfully, Tarantino cooled down, rewrote the third act, and the film is now ready to shoot on December 8.
Tarantino, an outspoken advocate for the preservation of film, has very openly and proudly spoken of shooting this project on 70mm film. This will be the first film since The Master in 2012 to shoot on the format, which itself was the first film to be shot on the format since 1996 (Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of Hamlet had been the last since then).
Tarantino is one of the few directors out there who makes two events for his films: once when it’s announced, and then again when it premieres. The Hateful Eight looks to be a return to the slower, more talky aspects of Tarantino’s oeuvre after the kinetic hyper-violence of Django Unchained. And, as always, the most painful part is waiting.
