Broadway in Boston's 2016-2017 Season to Include 'Something Rotten!', 'The King & I' and More

The wait is over! Broadway In Boston has announced their 2016-2017 season. The announcement took place at the Boston Opera House on March 21st where the theatre community of the Greater Boston area gathered to hear what shows were going to make a stop in Boston during their tour across America.
The first show announced was the National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This production has been enormously successful on Broadway and even won Best Play at last year’s Tony Awards. Based on the novel by Mark Haddon and playwright Simon Stephens, this production is going on tour after entering its second year in New York. It is rare that a play goes on tour, seeing as musicals normally hit the road after successful runs in New York and London, but Curious Incident has gained so much popularity that it will be taken to cities across America, including right here in Boston.
The second exciting announcement for the season was Roundabout Theatre Company’s Cabaret. Roundabout has entered its 50th year with the revival of Kander and Ebb’s musical Cabaret. Following this announcement was the return of Finding Neverland to Boston after it’s Broadway run. This production started at the A.R.T. with director Diane Paulus. Dana Costello, a member of the Broadway company, performed “All that Matters Now” demonstrating the powerful score of Finding Neverland, written by Gary Barlow and Elliot Kennedy with a magical book by James Graham.

Another Tony winner joined the lineup next: The King and I. Currently running in New York City with stars Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe, this revival has had great success, and now Boston will be able to “Get to Know” this new production of a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical. And keeping in the theme of classics, the next show announced for the 2016/2017 season was Jersey Boys. This jukebox musical was a part of the Broadway in Boston 2012-2013 season is returning for another run in Boston with New Jersey’s famous quartet.
The next announcement is something new for the season, seeing as it is an illusion that has stunned Broadway audiences. The Illusionists will take their shot at mystifying Boston with incredible mind games and magical tricks. This announcement was followed by another magical show that will fly back to Boston. Wicked is returning to the Broadway in Boston lineup after its run at the Boston Opera House in 2013. As one of the most successful Broadway musicals, it will surely make a triumphant stop here on its tour.

To round out the season, Something Rotten! will kick off its tour in Boston. This is a new musical with a book, music, and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick along with John O’Farrell. This musical currently stars Brian d’Arcy James who performed “I Hate Shakespeare” with members of the company at the season announcement. This musical follows d’Arcy James’s character Nick Bottom who is a struggling playwright in the time of Shakespeare who, with his brother, creates the first musical.
After the shows were announced for the 2016-2017 Broadway in Boston season, there was another special surprise that was up the sleeves of the presenters. Hamilton will make its way to Boston for the 2017-2018 season! This show has exploded in New York and will begin its tour next year, first in LA in August of 2017. The city that served as the hub of the American revolution will get a chance to see the hip-hop musical that tells the story of our founding fathers and the beginnings of this country.
