The sun is out, the snow is melting, and temperatures are rising as we move from bitter winter to brighter spring days ahead. As you step outside to enjoy the sunshine, here are five songs to get you in the mood for the upcoming season.

Clairo’s “Softly”

Off her 2019 album Immunity, this track highlights Clairo’s signature airy vocals with a simple, bass-heavy backing track and bright, electronic synth. The gentle and sunny nature of the track embodies the feeling of stepping into the sun for the first time on a warm day.

Musician Sophie Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy.

Soccer Mommy’s “Crystal Eyes”

Beginning with an already catchy guitar riff, “Crystal Eyes” has a unique groove to it, accompanied by Sophie Allison’s muddled vocals, which blend seamlessly with the instrumental tracks themselves. The intimacy of the track is intriguing, as it feels like we’re laying on a picnic blanket under the blue sky, with Allison telling us, “I’ll always give you another try / to let me behind those crystal eyes.”

Hozier’s “Wildflower & Barley” (Ft. Allison Russell)

Hozier is known for the vibrant imagery and allegorical nature of his music. “Wildflower & Barley” begins, “Springtime in the country / Each time, I’m shocked by the light,” and goes on from there to describe the season in rich, lyrical nature, accompanied by the harmonies of Allison Russell, who compliments his voice as they spin the soothing tale of “riverboat, wheelbarrow, wildflower, and barley.”

Father John Misty’s “Real Love Baby”

Country swagger mixed with a more indie sound creates a charm in “Real Love Baby” by Father John Misty. With  vintage-sounding vocals and backing beat, the song has a comforting factor that feels like a warm embrace.

The band Peach Pit.

Peach Pit’s “Peach Pit”

Guitar-forward, this track seems to drone on lazily, like a nap in the sun. Peach Pit’s Neil Smith has vocals that match this energy. He and the rest of their band seem to take their time on this track, and it pays off. Despite the relaxed nature, the band still makes way for a wailing guitar riff halfway through, nailing their signature sound. As the music drifts off, so do we, the entire song like a satisfying nap in the sun.

These five tracks show the feeling of spring through their vocals, melody, and overall production. We can all listen to these songs and feel sunshine on the skin, hear birds chirping in our ears, and feel the soft grass on our feet, even if the snow is still piled high outside.
