Ten Best Videogames of 2012

This year in video games continues to be a big year for sequels with two, three, and four in many of these game’s titles. Despite this, many amazing new properties were created this year that show that the gaming industry is just as fresh and innovative as ever. This year was also a big year for downloadable games with two even making this list.

Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3 is the final game in the Mass Effect Trilogy and brilliantly ties together the story lines of the last two games. It’s addicting gameplay, engaging story, and interesting characters make Mass Effect 3 one of the best games of the year. While the game’s ending underwhelmed many people, the whole game itself is truly remarkable.

Halo 4

Halo 4 starts a new trilogy in the Halo series and is developed by a new studio, 343 Industries. While this might seem like a move that would hinder the quality of the game, this is far from true. Halo 4 is one of if not the best games in the Halo series. The story adds a mysterious new planet with challenging new enemies and the multiplayer continues to create new innovations for first person shooters.

 Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin’s Creed III finishes the storyline of Desmond Miles and his ancestors. This game follows the story of Desmond’s ancestor Connor, a Native American assassin who lived in colonial America during the revolution. Through masterful storytelling, an intriguing main character, and an amazing recreation of colonial New York and Boston Assassin’s Creed III creates an extraordinary experience.

Borderlands 2 continues the hilarious game series with millions of more guns and addictive online cooperative play. This shooter role playing game is on of the best games of the year because of its amazing world, characters, and gameplay.

Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 continues the open world first person shooter series with an interesting story, engaging gameplay, and amazing locations. This game is one of the best games of the year because it shows how immersive open world games can be.

 Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is yet another installment in the Call of Duty series. Despite the large amount of games that this series includes, each installment is creative and better than the last. Call of Duty: Black Ops II continues this trend with an interesting story, addictive multiplayer, the challenging zombies, and some new modes.

 New Super Mario Bros. U

New Super Mario Bros. U is a launch game for the Wii U and expands on the classic side-scrolling Super Mario gamelplay. Through new innovations due to the Wii U gamepad New Super Mario Bros. U is a great mix of the new and old.

Dishonored is a first person stealth game that is created by the makers of the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series. Through an immersive world, engaging story, and addictive gameplay Dishonored creates an amazing stealth action experience that should definitely be experienced.

The Walking Dead is video game based on the popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman. The game was released as downloadable episodes before being released as a retail game. Through its emotional story, well written characters, and revitalization of the point and click adventure The Walking Dead places itself as one of the best games of the year.

Journey is an independent video game for Playstation 3 created by Thatgamecompany. It was originally released as a downloadble game and was later made available for retail as Journey Collector’s Edition. The game is a visual masterpiece that evokes emotion in the player and creates a bond between two players online. Through its innovative storytelling techniques, beautiful graphics and locations, and amazing soundtrack Journey sets itself as one of the best games of the year.
