Scandal Recap/Review: "Icarus"

Raina Deerwater ’16 / Emertainment Monthly Staff
In this episode of Scandal, “Icarus”, we open on a young Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), listening to her cassette tapes, eating her cheerios and reading books as she does. She’s saying goodbye to her mother as Mama Pope goes out the door and onto plane that will in the future be shot down by the one and only Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). Poor lil Olivia knows none of this as she says goodbye to her mom and we uncomfortably cut back to the present day.
Present-day Olivia needs to decide on whether to run the President’s campaign again or take on the new exciting case of Democratic candidate Josephine Marcus (Lisa Kudrow). Who wouldn’t take Phoebe Buffay over that creepy guy who killed your mom?  She ends up choosing the better option of Josephine, but first she has to have heated eye contact with Fitz because it’s probably in Kerry Washington’s contract.

Now that we’ve got that all out of the way, Olivia can run the heck out of Josie’s campaign with her best redhead bud, Abby (Darby Stanchfield). They are having some troubles because ol’ small town Josie Marcus is not getting as angry as she should. They solve it with a quick fake sexist campaign ad from Josie’s competitors. Then in her interview, she just yells at James (Dan Bucatinsky) and everyone for being super sexist. It’s another win for Pope and Associates.
Actually it’s just another win for just Olivia and Abby because everyone else is off doing things on their own. Quinn (Katie Lowes) is failing at shooting a gun until Charlie (George Newbern), nobody’s favorite assassin, helps her shoot. Maybe there’s sexual tension there, this is Scandal after all, and no one had sex in this episode.  But Charlie is working for Papa Pope (Joe Morton). He’s probably going to turn her evil or into a spy or something, but we are all more concerned about if Charlie and Quinn are going to bang.

Back at the White House, Fitz is bummed because Olivia dropped him and because he constantly has to have sad eyes, apparently. He is now going to have to deal with the VP Sally Langston (Kate Burton) running as an Independent against him in the next election. All the ladies are getting a foot in the door in this election, but the only lady Fitz really cares about is drinking wine and having a lot of capital “D” daddy issues.
In the final moments of “Icarus”, Fitz goes to Olivia’s apartment and asks her to please, please come back. Classic Fitz. Olivia is casual and asks Fitz if he shot down that one plane that had her mom on it. Fitz is shocked and appalled but doesn’t confirm or deny anything. Hopefully, the fact that Fitz basically killed her mom will finally allow her to move on to someone else (because Fitz is the worse and Olivia has the body and face of Kerry Washington and could have any man in Washington). Let’s hope for that next week.
