I’ve been a huge fan of electronic music for years now, but I always seem to find myself looking for something more from the diverse genre every winter. The heavy, bass-driven tracks from superstar DJs like Hardwell or Porter Robinson (just to name a few) feel out of place when the temperatures start to dip and more time is spent cozying up indoors rather than basking in the sun at a massive festival. Thankfully, musicians like Jon Hopkins exist precisely for this very time of year.

The London-based producer has perfected the art of down tempo electronic music. Immunity, his newest album, takes you on an auditory journey through complex layers of beats, melodies, and rhythms. Hopkins’ musical prowess is most noticeable when you compare the detailed simplicity of his brand of electronic music to so many other producers out there today. His music is more about providing you with an in-depth sonic experience rather than simply providing you with dirty beats to get down to.

With Hopkins, you learn to expect the unexpected. There are no superfluous bass drops or frantic buildups on these tracks. Instead, the producer painstakingly creates the layers behind each song, never adding anything unnecessary to the tracks. The finished product is an extremely tight album where every beat, every key change, and every shift in tempo serves a distinct purpose and adds something unique to the overall product.
