American Hustle and Gravity Lead The Pack With 10 Academy Award Nominations Each

Shannon O’Connor ’16 / Emertainment Monthly Editor-in-Chief
At the early hour of 8:38am ET / 5:38am PT, Chris Hemsworth and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominees of the 86th Annual Academy Awards.
Coming out on top of all the nominees was American Hustle with a total of 10 nominations, including a nomination in every acting field, directing and Best Picture. Gravity also scored 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director. 12 Years a Slave was a close behind with 9 nominations including 3 of the 4 acting categories (no Best Actress nomination), directing and Best Picture.
While the success of American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave came as no surprise seeing how both films fared at the Golden Globes on Sunday January 12, there were many snubs and surprises this morning when the nominees were announced. Shoe-in nominees like Robert Redford (All Is Lost), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) were no where to be found on the Oscar ballot. Even Oprah Winfrey who portrayed the boozy housewife in Lee Daniel’s The Butler was edged out of the Best Supporting Actress race by Sally Hawkins for her performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
With all the snubs and surprises (Jonah Hill scoring a Best Supporting Actor nomination!), the 86th Annual Academy Awards will definitely be an exciting and interesting ceremony.
The ceremony, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will be on March 2nd on ABC 7pm ET/ 4pm PT.
