Within a year Seth Meyers has hosted The Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, his brand new talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers and now he can add the 66th Annual Emmy Awards to his resume. His only problem, topping that in 2015.
Meyers seemed like one of the most logical choices since NBC will broadcast the Primetime Emmy Awards this year.
“Seth’s expertise and ease in front of a live audience during his time at SNL, as well as his comedic brilliance both as a writer and in front of the camera on SNL and Late Night, makes him the perfect choice to host the Emmys,” said Paul Telegdy, NBC’s president of late night.
Having Meyers hosting the Emmys will only help the newest late night host garnish a new audience as well. Joining Meyers’ Emmy team is TV producer Don Mischer who has won 13 Primetime Emmys for his work on Variety Specials and Special Event programs. His most recent work has been directing the 83rd-85th Academy Awards and producing the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.
While many were probably hoping that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey would host the Emmys, there is no reason to worry. Poehler will probably be nominated for another great season as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation and Fey is Emmy royalty so she will definitely be in attendance. Plus, Poehler and Meyers are very good friends and as proven on SNL they have excellent chemistry, so she will most likely pop in for a sketch. Perhaps a “Really!?! With Seth & Amy” segment is in order at this year’s ceremony.
Last year’s host, Neil Patrick Harris, raked in nearly 17.63 million viewers, the highest amount since the 57th Emmys in 2005. With Late Night getting positive reviews and since Meyers is still very popular in the 18-34 year old demographic, that number is still very possible. Even if the ratings don’t make it to that level, Meyers should have no problem delivering a witty and confident performance at the Nokia Theater on August 25th.
