Review: Washed Out's "Weightless"

Now in the full swing of summer, Washed Out has released a new long-form video for “Weightless” (from his acclaimed album, Paracosm), that exemplifies everything that summer is about from waking up at 2:00 pm, spending time with your best friends, summer love, and dream sequences of wearing armor and making hummingbirds appear in your hands.
Directed by David Altobelli (M83, Sia, Conor Oberst), the mini film tells the story of unrequited love, youth, and freedom. The film follows the story of a young adult enjoying his summer in the Los Angeles suburbs but soon finds his emotions for his best friend taking over and finally decides to share these feelings with him. Unfortunately, his love isn’t accepted and now he is free and unrestrained to do as he wants. Of course he’s depressed, but now he’s free in a sense. The video does a great job making you experience the ebbs and flows of blissful freedom that come in the summer months.
Altobelli talks about the video, saying “Unrequited love is a universal emotion. In this case, the emotions are heightened because there exists yet another wall between the protagonist and the object of his affection. It’s heartbreaking and inevitable, but it’s also just part of being a kid in love.” (Pitchfork, June 4th)
Furthermore, Washed Out has added August and September to his 2014 tour for the Paracosm album. During the tour, Washed Out has performed at festivals such as Governor’s Ball and Bonnaroo and looks to perform at more festivals such as WTF? What The Festival (Dufur,OR), and Firefly (Dover, DE).
