The AMC smash hit, The Walking Dead has been renewed for a sixth season just ahead of its fifth season premiere this Sunday.

The post-apocalyptic zombie series, created by Robert Kirkman and based off the acclaimed comic book series, has become a smash hit with viewers. Starting off with relatively low ratings during its first two season, The Walking Dead fan-base has grown exponentially. Last season’s finale drew in a record shattering 16 million viewers. This was a drastic growth from the season three finale, which drew in 12 million viewers. The show remains the highest rated show in cable history.

The Walking Dead tells the story of a small group of survivors living throughout Georgia during the zombie apocalypse. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), a sheriff, takes on the responsibility as leader of the rag-tag group of survivors as they journey to find sanctuary away from the zombies. At every turn the group is faced with new horrors, changing dynamics in their group, and hostility from scattered remains of the human population. Survival is their main goal as the structured society crumbles around them.

The Walking Dead has proven to be a major success for AMC. Following the ending of the Emmy-winning Breaking Bad, this show has become the major draw to the network. Before this recent renewal, the network officially ordered a companion series for the show, which will aim to have a pilot for the 2015-2016 season. The new series is said to focus on the early days of the zombie breakout.

Rick and the gang will return for another zombie bashing, car stealing, and sometimes puzzling (Seriously, how do they keep finding food and functioning cars?) season next year. Until then make sure to tune into The Walking Dead. Season five premieres this Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.
