Netflix and HBO Lead The Pack In Golden Globes TV Race
James Canellos ’17 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
This year’s film categories played it pretty safe in terms of the nominees. The Hollywood Foreign Press didn’t nominate any film that was too drastically shocking. However, this year’s television categories are a completely different story. The Globes mixed it up drastically, in their comedic field. For Best TV series, Musical or Comedy three first season programs got nominated and none of them are a primetime series. Orange Is The New Black, which was wrongfully snubbed last year, and Girls seemed like the only safe bets. Joining them is the often overlooked Jane the Virgin, the raunchy Silicon Valley and Transparent which many thought would be too out there for the HFP. These excellent additions finally ended the reign of regulars Modern Family and The Big Band Theory, not even Jim Parsons could sneak in. However, in the drama category, the only new addition is The Affair, while shows like Mad Men, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder were left out in the cold. Murder’s the only show out of the three to secure a nomination, Viola Davis earned a much deserved Best Actress in a Drama.
The 72nd annual Golden Globes will be hosted once again by former Golden Globe winners Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on January 11th on NBC.
