The next Hedwig has been announced and it is huge! Brush off those golden stilettos, the Farrah Fawcett wig and bag of gummy bears because Darren Criss has found his first post Glee role as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Criss will join the Tony Award winning revival from April 29th until July 19th at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre in NYC. He will join Lena Hall, who will continue her 2014 Tony Award winning performance as Yitzhak. Criss will take over the role of Hedwig from Broadway veteran and the original Hedwig, John Cameron Mitchell. Mitchell will play the role until April 26th. He is currently taking a leave of absence following a knee-injury and Michael C. Hall has stepped in the role once again.

Criss is no stranger to musical theatre or the Broadway stage. Criss first garnered attention upon creating StarKid Productions with some of his classmates from the University of Michigan. StarKid went onto create A Very Potter Musical with Criss playing the lead role of Harry Potter. He made his Broadway debut in 2012 in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying as J. Pierrepont Finch. His work in the musical was well received as he danced, belted and wooed the audiences night after night. Despite all of his work in the theatre, his most notable role continues to be Blaine Anderson on FOX’s hit TV show, Glee. His additional film and TV credits include Girl Most Likely, Eastwick and Little White Lie.

With this revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, an entire new generation has been introduced to the amazing transgender German rock-singer. In a poignant and simple video posted to his official Facebook page, Criss sits down and says, “I’m the new Berlin Wall baby!” Criss follows in the footsteps of 2014 Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and John Cameron Mitchell.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a musical comedy that shows the journey of Hedwig, a transgender woman from East Berlin. She has brought her one night only concert to the Belasco Theatre in NYC. Hedwig tells the story of her band “The Angry Inch,” her botched sex change operation, and the loves of her life through humorous stories and songs. With music and lyrics by Stephen Trask and a book by John Cameron Mitchell, this Broadway production features Broadway hits like “Sugar Daddy”, “The Origins of Love”, “Wig in a Box” and ‘Midnight Radio.”
