50 years ago The Sound of Music won the Oscar for best picture and became an instant classic. So tonight at the 87th Academy Awards, Lady Gaga sang a stunning tribute honoring the movie and its amazing music.

The performance, (which received a standing ovation,) also ended with the original Maria herself, Julie Andrews, presenting best score. A teary-eyed Andrews who said the number “warmed her heart” discussed the immense power score can and does have in film.

Beyond being an incredible tribute, this commanding performance could be just what Lady Gaga needs to revamp her career. Gaga sang some of the hardest music and highest notes with poise and power. To people who still only know her as the girl in the crazy costumes, this Sound of Music mash-up could be the final push in proving just how amazing her talent really is.

Two important questions for now: where was Lady Gaga during the NBC Sound of Music live-event? And: when will we get to see Gaga in a stage (or movie) production of Funny Girl? We may have a new Barbara Streisand on our hands.
