Ever since directing District 9, Neill Blomkamp has earned himself a name as a director with intense visual flair. Even if some felt that his previous effort, Elysium, was lacking in the writing department, its style and aesthetic couldn’t be denied as a positive.
On the eve of his latest release, Chappie, Blomkamp has confirmed what he had been hinting at for months: that he will helm a new Alien project at Fox.
It all started in January of this year, when mysterious bits of concept art began appearing on Blomkamp’s Instagram. Later, Blomkamp would confirm that these were ideas he had for an upcoming Alien motion picture, but at that point it was just that, concept art.
However, as the month wore on, Blomkamp began to seem more and more enthused about the project and about the possibility of it becoming a reality. Ironically, it was Fox that was chomping at the bit for a new use of the Alien franchise, and Blomkamp who was feeling hesitant, saying, “Me. I’m the problem. Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.”
It seems that Blomkamp has overcome that particular mental roadblock, as he posted yet another picture on his Instagram, saying that, “Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien”
Alien and Prometheus director Ridley Scott will be producing while Blomkamp will be taking up writing and directorial duties. There is no set release date, production start date, or even a screenplay to go off of, so it may be a good long while before Blomkamp can begin production.
Still, with this news, there is only one thing that can cross one’s mine: please, please let Chappie be good.
