To say that the previous Haunted Mansion film was not well-received would be a gross understatement. It would in fact be fairer to say it was reviled, holding a whopping 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That may be changing in the near future.
Director Guillermo del Toro has been working on and off for the past five years to get one of his many passion projects – a new adaptation of The Haunted Mansion – made. And with today’s announcement, that may be coming closer to a reality.
Ryan Gosling has recently been said to be in talks with del Toro to star in the upcoming adaptation. The two have enjoyed a close relationship as of late, having been photographed in Disneyland riding, among other things, the Haunted Mansion ride. In addition, del Toro moderated a screening of Gosling’s film, Lost River, at SXSW.

The film fits directly into the director’s wheelhouse of Gothic horror and ornate production. Del Toro has his own haunted house film, Crimson Peak, coming out this fall.
A darker, more sinister take on the ride may be precisely what is called for in this adaptation. Del Toro has had his fingers in a good many pies over the past several years, but this one in particular has been a project for which many have been waiting. With this news breaking, we may finally be seeing traction.
