With Greg (Santino Fontana) gone, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has set its sights on the women, focusing on the budding relationship between Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) and Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz). The latest episode, Why Is Josh’s Ex-Girlfriend Eating Carbs, focuses on Rebecca kidnapping Valencia and forcing her into friendship and it could not be more entertaining.
Why Is Josh’s Ex-Girlfriend Eating Carbs sees Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) finally beginning law school and making a new friend, Sunil (Parvesh Cheena). While this friendship brings new life to Paula, it also makes the rift between Paula and Rebecca all the more apparent. Paula and Sunil spend the episode stressing about their workload and skulking around trying to steal a fancy note-taking app from a rude classmate. Meanwhile, Rebecca is trying desperately to befriend Valencia- mostly in order to find someone who will talk to her about Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III)- as both Paula and Heather (Vella Lovell) refuse to indulge her anymore.
Back in West Covina, Josh has been struggling with being single. This leads him to sing only real song of the episode, “Thought Bubbles,” which explains how he doesn’t know how to be alone with his thoughts. The song is fun and, truthfully, a little too painfully relatable. He also throws himself into his work, re-organizing everything in sight. When his boss says that one of the speakers at Electric Mesa has blown, Josh is more than happy to make the trip out to go fix it.
Fueled by the anger of seeing Josh and their bad drug trip, Rebecca and Valencia decide to pee all over Josh’s sound equipment. The two solidify their bond over the act of vandalism, only to be caught by Josh. The two women have another cathartic moment and tell Josh off for the way he has treated them both. Valencia and Rebecca leave feeling empowered and better than they have in forever. Josh, on the other hand, is left to meet a potential new love interest played by the amazing Brittany Snow.
Why Is Josh’s Ex-Girlfriend Eating Carbs? ends with all of our characters happily discovering new relationships or new facets of old relationships. Everyone seems content and excited about the future, except there is one problem. Paula and Rebecca continue to grow further and further apart. The episode ends as both watch each other form new friendship with pain in their eyes, leaving the audience to weep while anxiously awaiting the next episode.
