Nearly a year after leaving the world’s most famous boy band, Zayn Malik has finally released his own music. A new single, to be specific, titled “Pillow Talk.”

The song dropped near midnight on January 28th and gave fans the first taste of what Malik’s solo project and future album would sound like.
Upon the first million listens, this song blew me away. It was catchy, seductive, and made me want to hear the rest of what Malik has in store on his upcoming album (which is to be released on the one-year anniversary of his infamous One Direction departure).
Starting with a preview of the vocals to come, the song begs you to “climb on board,” and join Malik in his new journey. His new direction.
However, as I continued to listen, I began to notice that this song is actually rather predictable, and not that far off from the newer music One Direction has released.
In fact, it shares many parallels beat-wise to songs such as “Drag Me Down,” “Perfect,” and “Love You Goodbye” —  all of which have a slow buildup to a power-packed chorus and then a slow mellowing out until the next chorus comes around. The only major difference between Malik and the boy band is the blatant sexual content in “Pillow Talk.”
This new single was a huge difference, however, from the rumored “first Zayn single” that hit the internet only a few weeks after the 1D split last March. A partial track titled “I Won’t Mind,” was uploaded to YouTube by Malik’s then producer, and caused a commotion amongst fans who were eager for Malik to grace their ears with his new indie style. But, to many fans’ disappointment, his official single offers nothing of the sort. It is just echoing the bubblegum pop he grew famous for.
So what do you think?
Is Malik moving in a new, better direction? Or should he go back and join in ONE Direction?
