Miley Cyrus shocked the world once again when she released her new single “Wrecking Ball” on Vevo last Monday. The controversial new video quickly gained enough public attention to break the website’s record for most viewed video in 24 hours.
Reaching an audience of over 19.3 million people in one day, “Wrecking Ball” completely shattered the Vevo record, which previously belonged to One Direction. Their single “Best Song Ever” reached 12.3 million views during it’s first 24 hours. Cyrus is now reclaiming the record from One Direction, who stole it from her last hit single “We Can’t Stop.”
Just like her VMA performance and her “We Can’t Stop” video, Cyrus’ new single has come with quite a bit of controversy. “Wrecking Ball,” which features a naked Miley licking a sledgehammer and swinging on a wrecking ball, many critics have described as “sex-crazed” and “soft porn.”
Cyrus defended her video to MTV News saying, “I think the video is much more, if people get past the point that I’m naked and you actually look at me you can tell that I actually look more broken then even the song sounds.”
The negative hype is doing nothing to stop Miley, who is be busier than ever. Cyrus celebrated her accomplishment of reclaiming the record by releasing the track list for her upcoming album “Bangerz” on her Twitter page. “Wrecking Ball” is the second single off of the much-anticipated album, which will feature artists such as Britney Spears, Big Sean, and Nelly. The album “Bangerz” will be released on October 8, just three days after Cyrus hosts and performs on Saturday Night Live. Earlier that week on October 2, her MTV documentary Miley Cyrus: The Movement will debut.
The ex-Disney star truly seems as though she “can’t stop.” Though we are seeing a whole lot of Miley in “Wrecking Ball,” with this busy month ahead of her, we’re bound to be seeing a lot more of her in the future.
