Returning to 'Twin Peaks': The Cult Series’ Revival

Series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost have dropped breadcrumbs about the possibility of returning to Twin Peaks throughout the 25-year hiatus since the cult classic ended on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. But as of October 6th, 2014, the pieces have come together as Showtime Networks and the geniuses behind Twin Peaks released a teaser announcing the show’s return in two years. The haunting yet pleasant notes of Angelo Badalamenti’s original piece for Twin Peaks bring us back to the nostalgia and mystery that made the series so intriguing and novel to watch. Chillingly, in final episode, the spirit of Laura Palmer echoed to Cooper, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” Can David Lynch and Mark Frost foresee the future? Who knows, but I’m glad this prophecy came true.
While it’s too early to say what will happen in the revival’s nine-episode season, Frost announced that the third season shall act as a “new chapter” for the show, filling the gaps left behind when the show got cancelled by ABC, due to a drop in ratings. The premise that was the smoking gun behind all the interconnected storylines was FBI Special Agent Cooper and the secretive but quirky townsfolk figuring out who killed the beautiful prom queen, Laura Palmer. Despite its gritty whodunit plot, Twin Peaks was full of humor, heart and a surrealist approach to filmmaking that cannot be intimidated to this day. The popularity of Twin Peaks made it a cult classic as Netflix bingers, nostalgic junkies and Lynch/Frost fans alike continued to adore the dramaedy’s legacy for how inventive it was during its time.
In a statement issued by Showtime, Lynch and Frost quipped: “The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back. We’re very excited. May the forest be with you.” 2016, let’s all take a trip back to Twin Peaks and become engrossed in a transcendent world full of unique characters, “a damn fine cup of coffee,” and metaphysical analogies that just continued to compel audiences everywhere.
