X Factor U.S.A. finalists Richard Mason and Laz—known as The Night Runners—have broken onto the synth-pop scene with their first single. The duo, which finished as one of the top eight groups on the first season of the reality show, makes a fizzy, energetic debut with the track, titled “Single” (in reference to the relationship status).

According to the bio on The Night Runners’ website, the duo was inspired by the nightlife of their home city of Miami, Florida. This influence is clear in the track—from the moment the synthesizer kicks in, the song screams club music. It’s the kind of bass-heavy song that’s right at home in the speakers of any place with bright lights and a good-sized crowd.

Lyrically, it’s a typical party song, unabashed and straightfoward. The main hook, “tonight you’re gonna act like you’re single,” carries on the oft-repeated message of dance, drink, and have a good time.

The video for “Single” is, in a word, smooth. With Mason and Laz in sharp-looking suits and NEXT model Lilly Sanders featured as the subject of the song, there’s a classy vibe to the video, an interesting contrast to the shameless chorus.

There’s always room for more sparkling tracks like this on a DJ’s playlist, and if The Night Runners keep this up, there just might be a spot on the charts for future endeavors.
