The next Hedwig has been announced and it is huge! Brush off those golden stilettos, the Farrah Fawcett wig and bag of gummy bears because Taye Diggs will take on the role of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Diggs will join the Tony Award winning revival for twelve week engagement starting on July 22, 2015 at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre in NYC. He will join Rebecca Naomi Jones, who will continue her role as Yitzhak. Diggs will take over the role of Hedwig, a transgender rocker from East Berlin, from Broadway Glee’s Darren Criss. Diggs will play the role until July 19th.
With Diggs returning to Broadway this marks his first role on the New York Theatre stage since 2005. He is best known for his work in the original company of Rent and his role on the Shonda Rhimes TV series, Private Practice. His other theatre credits include Carousel, Wicked, The Wild Party and A Soldier’s Play. Diggs is no stranger to the Hedwig universe considering in the musical, the running joke of Hurt Locker: The Musical involves Diggs. In the fake Playbill seen on the floor of the theatre, Diggs is featured as one of the main actors. His fake- Playbill bio reads, “Mr Diggs reminds you that Rent doesn’t pay itself.”
With this revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, an entire new generation has been introduced to the amazing transgender rocker from East Berlin. Rumors that Diggs would take over the role started a few days ago when Diggs tweeted a picture with the script for Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
