Smosh creators Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox had a huge week this past week. The comedy duo released their first feature film “Smosh: The Movie”. They also unveiled their wax Madame Tussaud’s figures at the premiere of the film held at the Westwood Village Theater in Los Angeles. The guys are some of the first Youtubers to have statues made and released! Their wax dopplegangers will be at Madame Tussaud’s San Francisco.
AwesomenessTV and Defy Media produced the film, which tells the fictional story of two friends (Padilla and Hecox) as they try to get rid of an embarrassing video put online before their five year high school reunion. After meeting with Steve YouTube (Michael Ian Black), the creator of YouTube, about taking down the video, the two end up having to teleport into YouTube to try and change the video “from the inside.” The movie features several cameos from big YouTube stars such as Grace Helbig, Jenna Marbles and Shane Dawson.
This past week the film skyrocketed on iTunes. It was the number one comedy film as well as the number 2 film overall on the iTunes charts. Currently, the film has a 62% approval rating from fans on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s unsurprising at their huge success, Smosh is one of the top channel on Youtube. It currently boasts over 20 million subscribers on it’s main channel alone. They were among the first creators to be honored with Youtube’s new diamond play button trophy, which is given to channels with 10 million subscribers. Looks like each of the guys can have a diamond play button to call their own!
“Smosh: The Movie” is currently available for download both domestically and internationally and can be purchased for $9.99 on platforms such as Google Play, iTunes and Vimeo. You can watch the trailer below!
