Season 3 Premiere of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'

Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns for its third season, kicking off after Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) officially transferred from the 99^th Precinct to the PR department. His whacky and lovable assistant, Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), followed him, leaving the team stunned as they wait to meet their new captain.

Bill Hader had some big shoes to fill as the new captain, Captain Dozerman. From his first interaction with the squad, Captain Dozerman’s deadpan humor echoes that of Captain Holt’s, except that he comes across more manic and highly-strung, stressing that he needs “EFFICIENCY, EFFICIENCY, EFFICIENCY!” from the team. The team’s encounter with the new captain is short-lived though, as he dies, due to a genetic heart condition, after catching Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) kissing during work hours. This sudden death is really quite a shame as Hader is an incredible comedian, and it would have been entertaining to see more scenes between Hader and Samberg, given their great on-screen chemistry from starring in Saturday Night Live together in the past.
The show is also picking up where it left off in the previous season’s finale when Jake and Amy “kissed for realsies.” In this episode, Jake and Amy go on an awkward – but incredibly laughable and endearing for the audience – first date, but try to keep their relationship “light and breezy” and a secret from the rest of the team and ultimately fail by breaking all the rules they set for each other. Detective Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), Jake’s best friend, is no doubt the number one fan of their relationship and squeals in excitement when Jake and Amy admit that they are seeing each other and that they were caught making out. What is unexpected and frankly slightly disturbing is when Detective Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) of all people follows Boyle’s lead and suggests digging up the precinct’s surveillance tape to see how this kiss went down. Jake and Amy go back and forth, but ultimately decide to be together despite the bad luck their relationship has brought so far. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Dan Goor shared that “[Jake and Amy have] told each other how they feel about each other, and that is a big part of the beginning of this season.” This looks like viewers will be seeing much more of their relationship in the weeks to come, and can only hope that things work out for the precinct’s favorite couple.

A new aspect we will be seeing a lot of this season is Holt and Gina working in the PR department, where there will be many opportunities for banter between Deputy Chief Madeline Wunch (Kyra Sedgwick) and Holt – their snide remarks and cruel comebacks to each other are still as funny as ever and a favorite among the fans.
This first episode answers questions the audience was left hanging with from the previous season. It did feel that the audience was rushed through a lot of things, as the audience said hello and bade goodbye to the new Captain Dozerman. The last scene is of Detective Pembroke (Dean Winters) from Special Crimes (who the team calls “The Vulture”) introducing himself as the new captain, leaving the team in horror and disbelief.
However, we are just glad that the 99 squad and their special breed of childish humor and witty one-liners is back.
