Top 10 Must See Summer Movies '16

Kyra Power ’19 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
It’s finally summer! That means barbeques, beaches, and obsessively binging every TV show from the past year or ten. The month of May already kicked off the summer season with some great movies including blockbusters Captain America: Civil War and X-Men Apocalypse and indies such as The Lobster and Weiner (Check out Emertainment Monthly’s reviews with the inserted links). Don’t worry; this trend will continue on through August! With all the time spent tanning, sleeping, and letting Netflix autoplay, it’s hard to decide what movies are worth the trek to the theater. Comedies, thrillers and much anticipated sequels are all such films that will be playing in the summer of 2016. These are the top ten films that you should definitely look out for.
1. Ghostbusters – July 15

In 1984, the men of SNL teamed up to create the hit Ghostbusters. Now, the women of SNL have teamed up to create what looks to be just as a hilariously bizarre reboot. Starring Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Melissa McCarthy, Ghostbusters follows this team’s quest to save New York from the amplified paranormal. The trailer offers witty one-liners, the glory that is Chris Hemsworth, and a lot of badassery.

Superhero movies are all the rage right now. Like most superhero movies, Suicide Squad follows a group of misfits whose powers are extorted by the government, but these misfits also all happen to be very violent, unstable criminals. DC Comics was incredibly successful with Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and it looks like they will be very successful with Suicide Squad. It is gritty, raw, and funny in a very rough way. Combined with its star studded cast of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis (just to name a few), Suicide Squad is looking like it will be the hit of the summer.

The promotion of this film really kicked off Mother’s Day weekend as this film is all about moms. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn band together against the evil that is Christina Applegate, the uptight controlling PTA mom who drives them crazy. They say no to doing everything ‘right.’ They get drunk, make bad choices, and despite all their ridiculous flaws love their kids. Bad moms? Maybe. Real moms? Definitely. With a great cast and a fun premise, Bad Moms should definitely stir some excitement.

Ellen DeGeneres finally returns as the lovable blue tang fish with memory loss, Dory. Released thirteen years after the hit Finding Nemo, Finding Dory seems to follow similar themes of family, letting go, and growing up as Dory sets out on a journey to find her real family. Centering on Finding Nemo’s hit character, this summer film seems packed with nostalgia along with some great laughs from comedians like Bill Hader, Kate McKinnon, and of course DeGeneres, herself.

An R-rated animated comedy/horror/adventure/action film from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. What could go wrong? Sausage Party follows Frank, a sausage who is blessed towards eternity by being picked out in a grocery store. He soon learns, though, that being bought means being brutally slaughtered and that the kitchen is hell for supermarket food. With no support from the other food items, he sets out on a journey to warn other food products and embarks on a path of self discovery. With an incredibly comedic cast included Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and Michael Cera, Sausage Party seems to hold up to Rogen and Goldberg’s ridiculous humor and also may start to change the field of animation.

Woody Allen’s latest film premiered on opening night at Cannes. Allen is still surrounded by the controversy of sexual assault and his last two films did, to say the least, not very well. Café Society though, offers an extraordinary cast of Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, and Kristen Stewart, all of whom have been incredibly well reviewed. Set in 1930s Hollywood, the film follows Eisenberg as he attempts to survive and love in a ruthless, backstabbing environment. Despite the repetitive genre of the film, Café Society looks to be a promising romance comedy.

An accountant is reconnected with an old friend from high school. Not a super promising premise, but add in two star comedians, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, the CIA, and lots of corporate espionage, it turns into the beginnings of a great summer comedy. The trailer reveals Hart to consistently break the first rule of improv, always say yes, to Johnson’s completely ridiculous and life endangering plans. Action and comedy packed, Central Intelligence promises to be a good time. And, with the tagline ‘Saving the world takes a little Hart and a big Johnson,’ lots of height jokes can be expected.

Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the fifth Bourne film promises a high intensity thriller. As Jason Bourne becomes aware of who he truly is, he begins his fight for justice. The trailer appears dark and fast paced, leaving no room for attempted action comedy. With Damon, Greengrass, most of the original cast and a few new faces, such as Oscar Winner Alicia Vikander, Jason Bourne is gunning to be a strong summer thriller.

The first of the Star Trek reboot films not directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Trek Beyond should be an interesting watch. From Fast & Furious director, Justin Lin, Star Trek Beyond offers the same levels of exciting action as the rest of the films. A possible added bonus comes from Simon Pegg’s co-authoring of the script indicating a funnier story may be in place, something many action films have been trying out recently.

The story of Ben-Hur is a classic. The 1959 version of the film won 11 Oscars. Fear over standing up to such a classic seems to have dissipated with the release of this remake from Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (known for Night Watch and Wanted). The film follows the traditional story of two brothers, but also promises a larger role for Jesus. Hopefully Ben-Hur will take advantage of new technology to increase the action and intensity of its classic chariot races. While this one could be a hit or a flop, it is definitely a film to keep an eye on.
