'New Girl' Review/Recap: "Teachers"
Raina Deerwater ‘16 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) go to a teachers conference with the super duper handsome Ryan (Julian Morris). Jess is forbidden to date Ryan as Teacher/Administrator relationships are against the rules. However, Ryan is practically a saint and also saves a drunk Coach from drowning in a pool, so who could resist this British charmer? Ryan and Jess lock lips at the end of the episode, as everyone could have predicted, but it doesn’t take away from the moment. Now there will be something to look forward to in future episodes, because Jess will be absolutely terrible at having a forbidden relationship, and obviously that will be great to watch.
During this time, Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick (Jake Johnson) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) decide to have “Guys Night.” Of course, seeing that these three men are who they are, “Guys Night” becomes all about sangria and feelings. Also, the biggest plot twist to date, which is that Schmidt cannot do laundry. There was no point to this at all except to make for some great physical comedy, and that is what the show went with. A marvelous training montage was formed from Nick pouring out laundry detergent on the ground. From the start, Nick, Schmidt and Winston are the three characters who have the ability to make something like laundry insanely hilarious. The chemistry and the history of the actors makes it easy to get laughs out of that situation.
Additionally, Schmidt and Winston can give a heartfelt speech to Nick about how he deserves love. The viewers need a good ol’ “Guys Night” in the fashion of these three at the this point in the season. The relationships between the characters it the strongest part of New Girl and we needed to be reminded of this in season four. All it took was some Sangria and laundry detergent to do so.
