After winning his second Academy Award for best original screenplay last year for Django Unchained, fans let their imaginations run wild with what Quentin Tarantino would do next.
Many joked about him going further back in time and making a revenge film about the Native Americans or something related to the Saturday Night Live skit ‘Djesus Uncrossed’. No, instead it has been reported that Tarantino will be making a Western that has been titled The Hateful Eight.
Of course this is a reference to Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, which was then remade as The Magnificent Seven. Tarantino has stated that his experiences shooting Django made him determined to expand on the genre, but The Hateful Eight won’t have affiliations with Django. The Hateful Eight might have some familiar faces though; it has been confirmed that Tarantino is interested in casting Christoph Waltz (who has won two Academy Awards from his previous roles in Tarantino films) and fellow Django alum Bruce Dern, who was just nominated for an Academy Award for Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.
Tarantino has expressed his desire to make just a few more films before he retires, so this could be one of his last projects in the director’s chair. Hopefully it pulls through, because some of Tarantino’s previous attempts have never seen the light of day, particular those in connection to his other films. He has tried unsuccessfully to make another sequel to Kill Bill and prequels for Pulp Fictionand Reservoir Dogs. However, after the massive success of Django Unchained it should be easier for Tarantino to bring anything he wants to the big screen.
